83 an hour DESCRIPTION OF WORK:
Under supervision of the Library Director this position performs various library tasks in providing library services to the public with special focus on children and young adults.
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Selecting children's books and materials Weeding the children's collection of old and/or outdated books Planning, preparing and presenting weekly storytimes for children:
baby through 5th grade Planning, preparing and coordinating the library's Summer Reading Program Planning, preparing and implementing after-school and evening programs Assisting patrons in selecting appropriate reading materials for children Assisting students and parents in finding information and resources Conducting library tours for any interested groups and or school groups Working with other staff members to create crafts and displays Exploring initiatives for promoting early childhood literacy - 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Working at the Circulation Desk when not otherwise engaged in other activities of this position Assisting patrons in locating materials Answering reference questions Promote community awareness of library resources, services and programs Assisting library director with Library Board preparation; substitutes for library director when necessary Assisting in overseeing building maintenance Assisting with development of library long-range plans, policy statements and budget Assisting technology needs - troubleshooting computer problems REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Good interpersonal skills and rapport with children and their caregivers Ability to be an effective storyteller and program presenter Ability to plan, prepare and present age-appropriate craft activities Knowledge of early childhood development, learning styles, and fundamentals of early literacy education Knowledge/creative ideas on how to conduct story hour appropriate to preschool children, using stories, songs, finger plays, actions, rhymes, ect.
Ability to meet and interact with people in a friendly and professional manner Ability to use computer, computerized databases and related software and hardware Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public and library stuff Ability to learn library software, methods and procedures Ability to travel for conferences and workshops Convey enthusiasm about learning, stories, information, library resources and the library's role in the community Outstanding time management skills; ability to set priorities and meet assigned deadlines TRAINING AND
Experience:
Any combination of training and experience that will allow the applicant to acquire the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the required tasks.
A good knowledge of children's books and literature is desired.
Be willing to earn CE credits toward certification by the NE Library Commission within a 3 year period after hire.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work performed by this position is performed primarily indoors and does require some moderate lifting (up to 50 pounds).
Reaching shelves up to six feet high and at floor level.
This job requires helping with set up and take down of other library programs.
Employee will regularly be required to sit, stand, climb, and kneel.
A normal work week will be 40 hours, with some evening hours.
